It has become hugely popular with residents, visitors, uniformed organisations and the biking community, of which many travel long distances to attend the event.
We have a steering group which has representatives from Community organisation, such as Veterans Response, our local Army Battery and South Tyneside Council who have an extensive knowledge of safety and organising public events. This ensures that the organisation and logistics of the day run smoothly and a well tested event plan is in place for safety, security, parking, road closures, crowd control, first aid etc.

Armed Forces Day has become a significant and much-anticipated event in the town’s calendar. It is a day that brings together the entire community — veterans, serving personnel, cadet forces, youth organisations, local charities, families, and residents — to honour and celebrate the contribution of His Majesty’s Armed Forces, past and present.
Seaham has a proud and longstanding affiliation with the Armed Forces, dating back to the 1850s with the formation of the 2nd Seaham Volunteers Royal Artillery. This regiment served with distinction in both World Wars, reflecting the deep-rooted military heritage of our town.
During the Second World War, the people of Seaham demonstrated extraordinary civic pride and commitment by funding the minesweeper HMS Seaham, which played a vital role in clearing mines ahead of the D-Day landings. This powerful connection to national service remains a source of pride within our community.
The North East has historically been a strong recruiting region for the Armed Forces, and Seaham continues to have a thriving and active veterans community. Attendance at our annual Remembrance Services is consistently high, demonstrating the deep respect and appreciation held locally for those who serve and have served.
The event is held in Seaham Town Park, with the newly restored War Memorial serving as the centrepiece of the day’s proceedings. Armed Forces Day begins with a Drumhead Service attended by veterans, cadets, and, where available, representatives of 4th Regiment Royal Artillery, who hold the Freedom of the Town. Their involvement provides a meaningful link to Seaham’s historic connection with this distinguished regiment.
Following the service, the event transitions into a community “Party in the Park” celebration. A large outdoor stage hosts local performers throughout the day, showcasing community talent and creating an inclusive, family-friendly atmosphere. The adjacent car park is closed to accommodate children’s rides and activities, and numerous stalls and information stands are present, including local organisations and charities.
The event is free to attend and is consistently well supported, with an average attendance of approximately 2,000 people. In addition to bringing the community together, the day also benefits other local organisations, including East Durham Veterans Trust, Seaham Royal British Legion, and the Mayor’s Charity.

The Displays That Bring It All to Life
One of the highlights of any Armed Forces Day event is the incredible effort put in by the individuals and groups who create the military displays you’ll see throughout the day.
These are often put together by veterans, enthusiasts, and community organisations who bring a real depth of knowledge and personal experience to what they present. Whether it’s carefully arranged kit displays, historical setups, or interactive stands, there’s a huge amount of time, skill, and respect behind what you’re looking at.
If you take the time to stop and chat, you’ll often find there’s a story behind every piece.
In some cases, you may even spot items like our 762mm display kits — fully assembled, painted, and included as part of larger displays. We’ve been genuinely proud to see a number of these used by display groups who share that same attention to detail and appreciation for how things should look when they’re done properly.
